Imagine you are accompanying a person to a Chinese restaurant. He has never been to one. The waiters do not speak English. What would you think you should teach them before going there? What would you suggest they eat, how to ask for utensils, how to find a bathroom, etc.

It was intresting on how there were alot of different customs. Like how you had to ask for the check and it is considered rude for the server to give you the bill without you asking for it. The first dish (the beef and brocoli dish), the meat was very tender and tasted good with the brocoli. Then the 3rd dish was good and the tofu looked like chicken and if I didn’t know better I would have thought it was chicken.

At a Chinese restaurant, I would tell a friend that does not speak Chinese that you should say the following phrases:

ni chile ma? which means “Have you eaten?”

    Responses include:
    wo chile means “I ate!”

wo hai mei chi means “I haven’t eaten”

qing ni gei wo yi bei cha? means “Please give me a cup of tea”

    xiexie means “thank you”

qing ni gei wo yi shuang kuaizi ma? means “could you please give me chopsticks”

qing ni gei wo yi bei cha? means “could you please give me a cup of tea”

cesuo zai nar means “where is the bathroom”

    baochi means “full”

When asked haochilema? it means “Was it good?”

haochi means “yummy” or “good food”

hen gaoxing renshi ni! means “very nice to meet you”

When you went a cup of tea, you tap two fingers on the table three times. Because it means thank you when done three times, and comes from the days of the emperor.

You should put your middle finger and index finger together and knock on the table 3 times as to say “thank
you!” to the person who serves you tea. The person who works there should give the customer advice! You should always say xie xie[thankyou] when a waiter gives you something!Never put your chopsticks upright in a bowl: it signifies the death of a family memeber at the household your eating at.:)

When I went the restaurant it was very exciting. We saw the chief fry some food. My favorite dish I had there was the beef and broccoli. The beef was better than the broccoli.

I think before you go to the restauraunt, you should spend some time with him and teach him how to ask for things, how to greet the host/hostess, and how to order food. I would recommend the tofu that we had today, it was very delicious. Also I would recommend Pad Thai noodles as well. I would teach him how to ask for chopsticks (kuai4 zi), fork (cha1 zi), spoon (shao2 zi), and napkins (zhi3). Then when you go to the restauraunt, he will be ready and started.

I think I would teach them how to say what they would like to drink, such as water, cola, tea, or whatever else they would like. Also I would teach them how to say hello, goodbye and thank you. Also if it was an authentic Chinese restaurant I would tell them about the proper Chinese etiquette like holding your bowl to your mouth and tapping a certain way for thank you. Knowing how to ask where the bathroom is and asking for certain things wouldn’t hurt either. Since the Chinese like to add soy sauce to a lot of things and use a lot of vegetables the dishes with those would be probably good.

    Josh:
I thought that the experience was very fun and it helped me use etiquite that I learned from class like how to drink tea and to let the host not have his back facing the door. I liked the food alot, especially the soup. I would teach my friend nihao, xia xien, and how to ask for water/tea and food. I would first suggest fried rice and lou mein.

Chaze: I thought that restaurant and the experience was really, I also think it took him alot of pratice and time to learn how to stir fry. And the soup that he gave us as the appetizer was very good and so was the beef and broccoli. And I also learned that the host should not have his back to the door, but over all the food and service was very good and delicous.

Iain- I really enjoyed the food there. I learned about how you tap two knuckles on the tables to say thank you for the tea. I also learned that you leave the tea pot top off to say that you want more tea. For the first time in my life, I was interviewed for the newspaper. I WILL GET IN THE NEWSPAPER. Watching the stir fry

If I took my friend to a Chinese restaurant, I’d probably make sure they know the difference between an authentic Chinese restaurant. I would then teach them basic words such as the following: Hello, goodbye, thank you, and where is the bathroom. I would also make sure they know the basic food items such as tea, rice, vegetables, water, fish, and other meats so they would be prepared to order there food in Chinese. I would suggest they get broccoli and beef, rice, possible tea if that’s what they like to drink.
